Michael Brown, 45, from Newhaven, East Sussex, received an eight-week prison sentence suspended for one year at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He was found guilty of posting messages on Facebook that suggested throwing eggs, fruit, and stink bombs at synagogues and Jewish businesses. His post ended with the phrase, “Does anyone have a good recipe for roasted synagogue?” During the sentencing, District Judge Sam Goozee emphasized the targeted nature of Brown’s message, stating that any member of the Jewish community reading the post would likely feel alarmed. The judge noted that the offense was exacerbated by racial hostility, particularly given the context surrounding the U.S.-Israel military action against Iran, which began on February 28. This date coincided with a post by the Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which Brown had responded to. In court, Brown claimed his post was intended as a joke and that he did not mean to cause offense. However, he eventually pleaded guilty to sending an offensive message through a public communication network. His defense highlighted personal challenges, including recent unemployment, isolation online, and a diagnosis of ADHD. Despite these factors, Brown was required to complete 15 rehabilitation activity days and 80 hours of unpaid work as part of his sentence. Separately, Syeda Khatun, 39, from Hackney, was sentenced at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. She was charged with hurling antisemitic abuse at Jewish children outside a secondary school in Stamford Hill on May 10. After returning from a school trip, she reportedly assaulted a father by pulling his beard and shouting antisemitic slurs. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that Khatun's sentence was increased from eight months to 12 months due to the aggravating factor of her hostility toward the victims' Jewish ethnicity. According to case files, Khatun initially directed abusive language at a mother holding a baby before turning her attention to the schoolchildren. When confronted by the father of one of the children, she physically attacked him, striking him in the face and continuing to yell antisemitic insults. Khatun was convicted following a trial on July 3 for three counts of racially aggravated assault, one count of racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of racially aggravated words and behavior causing harassment, alarm, or distress. Ragvesh Singh, a senior Crown prosecutor with the CPS London North, commented on the significance of the case, emphasizing the need to address antisemitism as a serious crime. Both cases highlight the ongoing issue of antisemitism in the United Kingdom, prompting calls for stronger measures to protect vulnerable communities. Authorities continue to monitor such incidents closely, ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators face appropriate consequences for their actions.
