The United Arab Emirates has launched a new higher education award designed to highlight academic excellence and promote a culture of innovation and sustainability. Announced on Tuesday, the UAE Higher Award for Education aims to recognize outstanding universities and students, support scientific research, and encourage collaboration between educational institutions and key economic sectors. The initiative was introduced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The award will honor top-performing institutions in four distinct categories. These include the leadership category, which will celebrate the contributions of leading universities, vocational institutions, and entrepreneurs in the higher education sector. The readiness category will focus on those responsible for transformative higher education projects, while the pioneers section will recognize innovation and enterprise. The national impact category will honor higher education partners and outstanding universities for their tangible contributions to society. Applications for the inaugural award will remain open until September, after which they will undergo evaluation and judging processes. The first set of award winners is expected to be announced during the final quarter of the current year. In June, Khalifa University of Science and Technology became the first institution in the UAE to enter the top 150 of a global higher education ranking. The university climbed 30 positions to rank 147th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, securing its position as the country’s leading institution for the ninth consecutive year. This achievement reflects the university’s commitment to fostering a diverse and globally competitive academic environment. The QS rankings included evaluations of 8,808 universities across 106 countries, with 1,504 institutions listed in the final standings. Khalifa University was recognized as the 12th best university globally for the international composition of its faculty, underscoring its efforts in shaping a globally minded student body. In January, Abu Dhabi University was acknowledged among the top 100 institutions for business and economic studies in another global ranking. It was placed 81st out of over 1,000 universities assessed in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. The ranking featured universities from 91 different countries, highlighting the growing reputation of Emirati institutions on the global stage. These developments signal a positive trajectory for higher education in the UAE, reinforcing the government’s dedication to investing in academic excellence and ensuring that its universities continue to meet international standards. As the UAE Higher Award for Education begins its implementation phase, it is anticipated that the initiative will further stimulate innovation, collaboration, and the overall advancement of the country’s educational landscape.
