However, the tone of his interview with Zacharia was markedly different. He also questioned why she did not immediately admit to failing the bar exam. Zacharia attempted to downplay the significance of the situation, stating she already knew she would be living in China at the time, making the results of the exam irrelevant. She explained that she had already registered for the bar exam but learned during the summer she would be moving to China, rendering the results meaningless. Nevertheless, she took the exam to avoid appearing as a candidate who withdrew. Zacharia graduated in law from Pepperdine University and previously worked for a prestigious law firm in China. Her resume also lists her role as chief legal advisor for a conservative organization in California. Critics and some legal experts challenge her repeated use of the term "attorney," noting there is no evidence she holds a license to practice law in the United States. Part of the controversy revolves around the distinction between the terms "attorney" and "lawyer." While these terms are often used interchangeably in the U.S., "attorney" generally refers to someone licensed to practice law, whereas "lawyer" can sometimes refer to individuals who have only graduated in law. Zacharia told the New York Times she sought advice before her television appearances as a commentator on how to present herself. Advisers suggested she avoid using the term "attorney" but found the title "lawyer" acceptable. However, legal experts warn that even the term "lawyer" could imply professional accreditation and potentially constitute a legal violation. President Trump referred to Zacharia as an attorney when he announced her appointment. For her current role as White House spokesperson, legal qualifications or licenses are not legally required.
