According to the study, the transmission appears to occur primarily among larger, mature fish during the breeding season. During this time, brown bullheads gather in dense clusters near the shoreline, increasing the likelihood of direct contact between individuals. These interactions, combined with the fish’s tendency to live close to the sediment, may facilitate the transfer of cancer cells. Researchers suggest that environmental factors, such as exposure to pollutants or shifts in hormone levels, could also play a role in weakening the fish’s immune defenses, making them more susceptible to infection.
