The former high representative, Christian Schmidt, has already spoken openly to Czech media about the strong American pressure he faced to resign before his mandate expired. Schmidt’s departure comes amid growing political friction over the role and influence of the Office of the High Representative (OHR). A political bloc has clearly stated that the OHR should be abolished, and that the newly appointed high representative, if named, must revoke all previous decisions made by past representatives. This stance was reiterated by Dragan Čović, president of the HDZ party in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who did not mention the legal chaos such a move could potentially cause. The situation has been further complicated by recent developments regarding Schmidt's resignation. In an interview with the Czech magazine Respekt, Schmidt confirmed that he had been subjected to intense American pressure to step down before his term ended. He cited a package of measures aimed at strengthening the integrity of the electoral process as one of the possible reasons behind the American dissatisfaction. These measures were part of his mandate during his tenure. It is worth noting that the reason for the American discontent was not related to the South Interconnection project, but rather to the elections, or perhaps something connected to them. In parallel, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its disapproval of the recent decision by the Office of the High Representative, stating that it lacks any legal basis. The issue has also drawn attention from Nebojša Vukanović, the leader of the List for Justice and Order party, who has voiced concerns over the implications of the decision. Meanwhile, the interim replacement of Schmidt, Louis Crishock, has been officially designated as acting high representative. His appointment carries full authority until the completion of the process of selecting a permanent successor. The OHR has clarified that Crishock will not invalidate any prior decisions made by previous high representatives. This clarification aims to maintain continuity while allowing for the transition period.
