Three lions have died at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park following a heatwave that pushed temperatures into the mid-30s Celsius range. The deaths, attributed to suspected heatstroke, mark the first recorded instances of heat-related fatalities among the park’s lion population in its 62 years of operation. The incident unfolded over the course of two weeks in early August, beginning with the sudden decline of a three-year-old lion named Mugi. On July 28, Mugi lost her appetite and soon became unable to stand. Zoo staff implemented cooling measures, including water spraying and subcutaneous fluid administration, but she ultimately succumbed to her condition. Two days later, another lion, Ichigo, who was 11 years old, followed suit. She died on July 31 after showing similar symptoms of severe dehydration and lethargy. A third lion, Luena, aged 15, passed away on August 1, completing the trio of fatalities. Post-mortem examinations revealed signs of multiple organ failure and severe dehydration in all three lions. While the zoo has confirmed these findings, the exact cause of death remains under investigation. Staff members noted that while the lions were born and raised within the zoo, they were not acclimated to the specific environmental conditions of Tokyo during the height of summer. Unlike the arid climates of sub-Saharan Africa, where lions naturally thrive, the humid and sweltering conditions in Japan posed a unique challenge to the animals' ability to regulate body temperature. The zoo, which houses 16 lions in total, reported that the majority of the herd exhibited signs of distress as temperatures climbed. Many of the lions began losing their appetite and displaying lethargy, prompting increased veterinary attention. Some individuals recovered with treatment, while others continued to worsen until they reached critical stages. In response, the zoo temporarily closed the lion exhibit to the public on July 23, citing the need for closer monitoring and care. It is unclear when the exhibit will reopen, though officials have stated that the situation remains under active management. A zoo representative, Miwa Kosaka, spoke to the BBC about the unprecedented nature of the event. She emphasized that while previous summers had been unusually warm, none of the lions had previously suffered from heat-related illnesses. “This is the first time we’ve encountered such a scenario,” she said, underscoring the severity of the current crisis. The extreme weather conditions, which saw temperatures reach nearly 39 degrees Celsius in late July, triggered heatstroke alerts across the region. Experts have pointed out that the combination of intense heat and high humidity in Tokyo creates an environment particularly challenging for large mammals like lions, which rely on efficient thermoregulation mechanisms.
