Poland’s political landscape has shifted dramatically as the nation’s main opposition party, the Law and Justice (PiS), faces a growing internal rift. A key figure within the party, former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, has taken steps to break away from PiS, forming a new parliamentary caucus that could reshape the country’s political dynamics. This move comes amid declining public support for PiS and rising challenges from far-right factions, potentially opening the door for a broader, more moderate opposition force. Morawiecki, once a central figure in PiS under the leadership of Jarosław Kaczyński, has led a group of 40 lawmakers in establishing a separate parliamentary bloc called Development Plus (Rozwój Plus). This decision followed their refusal to sign a loyalty pledge demanded by PiS leadership, marking a symbolic and practical departure from the party. While many of Morawiecki’s supporters still hold official membership in PiS, the formation of this new group signals a deeper ideological divide. Unless PiS initiates formal disciplinary action against these lawmakers, a process that could take several weeks, the split appears inevitable, with Development Plus likely evolving into an independent political party. Currently, Development Plus holds the third-largest representation in the Sejm, the lower house of Poland’s parliament, surpassing PiS’s reduced standing. With PiS’s parliamentary strength dropping to just 147 seats, the party has lost its previous dominance. This shift reflects a broader erosion of support for the ruling party, which has seen its approval ratings fall below 25%, its lowest level since 2011. At the same time, the combined support for two far-right parties, the Confederation (Konfederacja) and the Confederation of the Polish Crown (KKP), has climbed above 20%, posing a direct challenge to PiS’s traditional stronghold on the right. Kaczyński, seeking to counter this threat, has moved PiS further to the right, selecting Przemysław Czarnek as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in March. This choice underscored a strategic pivot toward a harder stance on key issues such as Ukraine, the European Union, migration, and environmental policies. By adopting more rigid positions, PiS has distanced itself from the moderate policies associated with Morawiecki’s tenure as prime minister from 2017 to 2023. This distancing has alienated some centrist voters, who were previously drawn to PiS’s early efforts to modernize Poland’s energy sector. Morawiecki, representing the more pragmatic and economically oriented wing of PiS, has expressed concerns over the party’s increasing radicalization. His vision for Poland emphasized economic growth and stability, values that appear at odds with the current trajectory of PiS. As the party moves further to the right, it risks losing the middle-ground electorate, a demographic that could be crucial in future elections. With the possibility of Morawiecki launching a new center-right party focused on economic development, there is potential for a realignment of Poland’s political spectrum. Such a party could attract voters disillusioned with both the far right and the hardline policies of PiS, offering a more balanced alternative to the current governing coalition led by Donald Tusk. While Development Plus may draw some support from PiS’s base, it is unlikely to completely replace the party’s influence. Nonetheless, the emergence of this new faction marks a pivotal moment in Poland’s ongoing political transformation.
