Premier Janez Janša’s new government has asserted that its priority is to increase national defense spending, contrasting sharply with the policies of the previous administration led by Robert Golob. According to a statement released by the political party Gibanje Svoboda, the priorities of Golob’s government did not include purchasing weapons, while those of Janša’s government are clearly focused on military investment. The claim comes amid ongoing discussions over fiscal responsibility and economic management within Slovenia's European Union membership. Janša took leadership of the government from Golob in early June, marking a shift in policy direction. In his announcement, Janša stated that his administration would fulfill the conditions set by NATO regarding increased defense spending. This move has sparked debate among political analysts and citizens alike, particularly given the financial performance of the country under Golob’s leadership. Gibanje Svoboda highlighted that during the period from last year to this year’s first quarter, Slovenia was the third most successful country in the European Union in reducing the ratio of gross public debt to gross domestic product (GDP). The reduction amounted to 4.8 percentage points, placing Slovenia ahead of Greece and Cyprus and above all other EU member states, according to data from Eurostat. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of Golob’s fiscal strategies, which have been praised for their stability and long-term planning. However, the party also pointed out that while Slovenia managed to significantly reduce its public debt relative to GDP, the average level of public debt across the eurozone rose by 1.5 percentage points during the same period, and the overall EU saw an increase of 1.4 percentage points. This contrast highlights the complexity of economic indicators and the varying impacts of fiscal policies across different regions. Furthermore, the party noted that since the first quarter of 2022, Slovenia has reduced its public debt-to-GDP ratio by nearly ten percentage points. This substantial decrease positions Slovenia among the countries with the largest reductions in public debt relative to GDP in the EU over a four-year period. Such figures suggest a robust recovery and effective fiscal management, even in the face of broader economic challenges. Despite these achievements, the current government has repeatedly claimed that public finances are in a dire state, a stance that Gibanje Svoboda disputes. The party argues that such claims lack empirical support and contradict official EU data. They emphasize that the current administration should take responsibility for its actions rather than attributing problems to past administrations. The party further asserts that citizens expect leadership that addresses real issues, not the dissemination of misinformation or distortion of facts. It warns that if the current government is unable to provide responsible governance, it should consider handing over leadership to those who understand fiscal responsibility as a duty, not an opportunity to seek blame. This call for accountability reflects growing public frustration with perceived mismanagement and a desire for transparency and competence in government.
