Sudan's ongoing war has placed the ancient Meroe pyramids, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, under severe threat. More than 200 pyramids, dating back over two millennia, are now vulnerable due to the country's escalating conflict and lack of security. Archaeological efforts have come to a complete stop, leaving the fragile structures exposed to environmental degradation and further damage. The situation has raised alarms among experts who warn that the pyramids could suffer catastrophic collapse unless urgent action is taken. The conflict, which has raged for more than three years, has disrupted all forms of preservation work at the Meroe site, located approximately 200 kilometers north of Khartoum in Sudan’s River Nile state. Archaeologist Mahmoud Suleiman described the current state of affairs as dire, noting that the site faces a potential disaster. He emphasized that the prolonged war has led to the dispersal of Sudan’s archaeological workforce and the suspension of foreign missions, both of which have played a role in the site’s significant deterioration. The Meroe pyramids, built between 800 BC and 350 AD, served as tombs for rulers of the Kingdom of Kush. These structures, unlike the grand pyramids of Egypt, are smaller, steeper, and more numerous. They rise from the desert landscape, forming a unique archaeological landscape that offers insight into the ancient civilization that once thrived in the region. However, recent reports indicate that the pyramids are suffering from accelerated decay due to environmental factors such as windblown sand and encroaching vegetation. Guard Mustafa Ahmed reported that sand has accumulated heavily on the pyramids and even within the temples, while grass continues to grow unchecked. This accumulation of sand, combined with the presence of salt from accumulated moisture, is causing erosion of the ancient stone surfaces. Antiquities inspector Mohamed Mubarak explained that the salt, released through the sand, is attacking the inherently fragile materials used in the construction of the pyramids. This process is gradually eroding the intricate carvings and inscriptions that provide historical and cultural value. Climate change has also been identified as a contributing factor to the site’s decline. Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities, making the preservation of these ancient monuments increasingly difficult. Experts warn that without intervention, the centuries-old artwork and architectural features could be lost forever. In addition to the physical threats posed by the environment, the broader context of Sudan’s internal conflict has compounded the challenges facing the Meroe pyramids. Since the war began in April 2023, UNESCO has documented widespread damage to cultural sites across the country, including the destruction or looting of at least 22 museums. The Meroe site, already weakened by years of neglect, now finds itself caught in the crossfire of a larger humanitarian crisis. Despite the growing concerns, there have been few public statements from government officials regarding the protection of the Meroe pyramids. Local guides and guards continue to monitor the site, though they admit that their ability to carry out meaningful conservation work is severely limited. The absence of international support and funding has left the site largely unprotected, raising questions about the long-term viability of its preservation. As the conflict continues to unfold, the fate of the Meroe pyramids remains uncertain. While the immediate focus of the war has shifted toward military and political developments, the cultural heritage of Sudan stands at risk of irreversible loss. The Meroe pyramids, once a symbol of the kingdom’s power and prosperity, now serve as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the fragility of history.
