Montreal police have recovered more than $1.1 million in stolen goods and cash following a multi-network investigation into organized shoplifting operations. The operation, which spanned over three months, led to the dismantling of two separate criminal groups responsible for stealing tools from hardware stores and reselling them online. According to authorities, the total value of the recovered property includes approximately $800,000 worth of new tools and nearly $485,000 in cash. The investigation began in early April, with police conducting searches in Laval and the Montreal borough of Villeray, Saint-Michel, Parc-Extension. During these raids, officers seized around $500,000 in stolen tools and $325,000 in cash. The operation continued into mid-July, when police executed another search in Kirkland on the West Island, recovering about $300,000 worth of tools and $160,000 in cash. These actions were part of a coordinated effort to dismantle the networks involved in the illegal activity. Five individuals have been identified as suspects in the case and face multiple charges related to theft. On August 26, a court order was issued to freeze the assets of one of the suspects linked to the Kirkland operation. Among the frozen assets is a residence estimated to be worth $1.2 million. This measure was taken to prevent the individual from liquidating or transferring their holdings. According to Éric Lafontaine, head of the Montreal Police Access and Proceeds of Crime Section, the suspects allegedly engaged in systematic shoplifting by visiting box stores during regular business hours. They would take advantage of the stores' open access to steal merchandise and later store the stolen items in their residences before selling them online. “Behind every shoplifting act is a cost not only for the targeted merchants, but also for all consumers, because the prices of products end up rising to compensate,” Lafontaine stated. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts to combat such crimes. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious when making purchases online, particularly when acquiring high-value items. They have also encouraged anyone who may have unknowingly bought stolen goods to come forward with information. Police are currently working to trace the origins of the stolen inventory and identify additional potential victims. The recovery of such a large amount of stolen property highlights the scale of the operation and the sophistication of the criminal networks involved. While the immediate results of the investigation are clear, ongoing efforts will focus on tracing the flow of illicit goods and identifying further instances of fraud or financial gain derived from the thefts.
