Statins and blood pressure drugs changing health risks of obesity, study suggests

A study published in The Lancet found that individuals aged 40 to 79 with obesity or overweight have comparable or even lower levels of blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol compared to those with a normal BMI, due largely to increased use of statins and blood pressure medications. This trend was observed over a 25-year period, during which these medications became more widely prescribed for middle-aged individuals with higher BMI. However, the study did not find similar improvements in younger adults under 40, possibly because of less frequent screening. Researchers emphasize that while these medications have helped reduce cardiovascular risk factors associated with obesity, the condition itself remains a significant health concern. The study is observational and cannot prove causation, highlighting the need for further research into whether these changes lead to improved long-term health outcomes.
