The move comes amid growing tensions within the Austrian parliament over government performance and policy direction. On October 14, 2026, Kickl launched a motion of no confidence against the entire cabinet composed of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), and Neos. The motion was presented through a rare emergency question that consisted of a single query: “Is this federal government still capable of managing its affairs?” The FPÖ has already determined the answer to be negative, while the governing coalition expects a similar response. In his speech, Kickl criticized the government as the “most expensive, bloated, incapable, and unpopular government” Austria has ever had. He accused Chancellor Christian Stocker of lacking a mandate from voters and suggested he would be better suited in Brussels than in Vienna. Kickl argued that Austria is in decline due to the government’s inability to act effectively. He cited high inflation, rising unemployment, weak economic growth, and increasing tax burdens as evidence of the government’s failure. Additionally, he raised concerns about security policies, including surveillance of messaging apps and proposed changes to gun laws. Kickl claimed these measures threaten Austria’s neutrality and undermine internal security. The FPÖ leader also criticized the SPÖ for internal turmoil and the ÖVP for being a group focused on maintaining power at the expense of the public interest. He warned that the current government is essentially a “single expression of distrust toward the population.” Kickl urged the governing parties to step down, predicting that new elections would result in their defeat. He accused the government of holding Austria and its citizens hostage. In response, ÖVP State Secretary Alexander Pröll defended the government, stating that Kickl’s rhetoric focuses more on polemics than on providing solutions. Pröll listed several initiatives implemented by the government since taking office, including drought relief packages, monitoring of potential threats, and a ban on headscarves in certain contexts. He emphasized that these actions required tough negotiations and compromises driven by love for Austria. Pröll also criticized Kickl for failing to capitalize on the opportunity to form a government, suggesting that he stood at the penalty spot but failed to score.
