He was found dead hours later following extensive search efforts. The man, aged 38, was originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, and lived in Pontebna, in the province of Udine. He had gone to the riverbank with his family and other compatriots to celebrate a holiday. Around 4 p.m., emergency services were alerted by witnesses who noticed a family in distress in the water. According to the Carabineri of Latisana, the youngest child, a five-and-a-half-year-old boy, was swept away by the current while playing with his sisters, aged nine and eleven. The father immediately entered the water and managed to bring the boy back to shore. The two older children were assisted by their mother and others nearby. After rescuing his son, the man disappeared into the river. Firefighters, upon learning he was missing, launched immediate search operations. His body was eventually located and recovered by divers on the opposite bank of the river. Initial assessments indicated that there were no strong currents in the area. Search teams included divers from Venice and Trieste, an helicopter named Drago based in Venice, and a maritime team from Portogruaro equipped with a boat featuring sonar technology. The rescued child showed signs of severe drowning syndrome and was taken care of by specialized medical personnel from the air ambulance service. He was transported via helicopter to the hospital in Udine and was later declared out of danger. The central operational unit Sores dispatched an ambulance and a medical vehicle to the scene. The tragedy has prompted discussions among local authorities and community members. While some have expressed condolences for the loss, others have called for increased safety measures along the riverbanks, particularly during festive periods when more families gather. Local officials have confirmed they are reviewing existing protocols for such situations and considering additional training for emergency responders. The father's death highlights the risks associated with recreational activities near rivers, especially when children are involved.
