The Financial Administration discovered Slovenia’s largest illegal cigarette factory on October 13 within the former Nafta Lendava complex in Trimline. Police and financial authorities confirmed at a press conference that at least 34 foreign workers were exploited in the facility. The victims include 33 citizens of Paraguay and one citizen of Bulgaria, all of whom are being treated as victims of human trafficking. The operation was located in a hall belonging to a local businessman, and the discovery has triggered intense political debate regarding labor laws and government accountability. Parliamentary representatives from the Left party have requested an emergency session of the parliamentary committee for petitions, human rights, and equal opportunities. They argue that recent draft amendments to laws concerning foreigners and employment further open the door to exploitation. Social Democrats have similarly urged the government to reject proposed legislative changes unless additional safeguards are included to protect foreign workers. Matjaz Han, president of the Social Democratic Party, described the events in Lendava as unacceptable and shocking. He stated that the situation represents a form of twenty-first-century slavery and called for immediate action to protect the victims and punish those responsible. Vladimir Sega, a member of parliament from the Left party, detailed the conditions inside the facility. He reported that the workers were deprived of food, mobile phones, contact with the outside world, and daylight. According to Sega, the individuals worked twelve-hour days under a system resembling slavery. He criticized the current government for creating working conditions that benefit criminal organizations. Sega noted that the proposed legislation ties foreign workers to a specific employer for six months, prevents them from joining their families, and denies them access to language learning. He demanded that these changes be withdrawn. The Left party is advocating for several specific legal reforms. They want to ensure that a worker who reports exploitation retains their residence permit and can immediately change employers. They are also calling for safe accommodation, legal aid, and psychosocial support for the Lendava victims and future cases. Sega argued that victim status should be granted regardless of whether the individual testifies before competent authorities. He pointed to previous cases, such as those involving the Maribor company, where employers received only suspended sentences after years of investigation. He believes this leniency signals to criminals that exploitation is profitable. The party proposes banning convicted individuals from establishing companies or employing new workers. Police investigations into the case focus on suspected human trafficking and tax evasion. Authorities found the workers living in poor conditions, forbidden from leaving the premises, and stripped of communication devices. They reportedly did not receive payment for their work. One suspect, Simeon Motaln, is currently on the run. He allegedly arranged for the foreign workers to be housed in the warehouse together with unidentified accomplices. Motaln owns two registered companies in Slovenska Bistrica, STRALIS and ZDEJS. STRALIS operates in road freight transport and trade, reporting a net profit of approximately 36,000 euros last year. ZDEJS engages in non-specialized wholesale trade and recorded a profit of nearly 94,000 euros. His name also appears in the ownership structure of an Austrian company, Lotus Logistik. Residents near his registered address reported seeing police patrol the area for three days and feared for their safety due to break-ins by unknown persons. A second suspect, Benjamin Kropec, owns the object in Trimline and a waste management company in Bistrica. Kropec maintains he had no knowledge of the activities taking place in his building. His company stated it is cooperating with investigative bodies to clarify the circumstances. Although police assessed that there were grounds for his detention due to potential witness interference, the prosecutor's office did not agree. The State Prosecutor's Office argued that evidence collected did not establish a well-founded suspicion that Kropec committed the alleged crimes. Unofficial comments suggest criticism toward the Financial Administration for not alerting police during its initial inspection. However, Finance Minister Dusan Pecnik rejected these claims, stating that officials initially believed the site was merely a warehouse. He added that police were notified immediately upon realizing it was a factory with foreign workers. Political tensions have emerged over procedural changes in the pre-trial phase. The government decided that written notifications will become mandatory for prosecutors. Interior Minister Franci Matoz defended the move, noting that police previously could not communicate why certain decisions were made because prosecutorial instructions were given orally. He emphasized that each institution must take responsibility for its actions. General State Prosecutor Katarina Bergant questioned why written explanations are not also mandatory for police. She argued that police information can sometimes be incorrect or insufficient. Bergant stated that if the government aims for transparency, it should impose this duty on both organs. Additionally, police will no longer require prosecutor consent to detain individuals for up to 48 hours. Igor Toplak, head of the police union, explained this change is intended to speed up proceedings. Prosecutors, however, consider these changes unnecessary and potentially unlawful, citing the Criminal Procedure Act which mandates prosecutorial guidance in pre-trial phases, especially regarding deprivation of liberty. Reactions from civil society have been swift. The Association of Free Trade Unions of Slovenia condemned the treatment of workers, describing it as a suspected worst form of human exploitation, trafficking, and forced labor. They expect maximum possible sanctions for the perpetrators. The Chamber of Crafts and Entrepreneurship of Slovenia expressed outrage at the revelations. President Blaz Cvar stated that human dignity has no price and that no one should earn money by depriving others of freedom. He warned that illegal business harms honest craftsmen and entrepreneurs who respect regulations and pay taxes. The chamber expects a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctioning of proven criminal acts. The Ministry of the Interior plans to request explanations from the prosecution regarding the release of suspects. Meanwhile, the political pressure continues to mount for stricter penalties against those convicted of human trafficking or severe worker exploitation. Proposals include bans on suspended sentences and time-limited prohibitions on owning, managing, or representing companies. For companies found responsible for exploiting workers, there are proposals to ban their business operations entirely. The focus remains on ensuring that victims are protected and that the cycle of exploitation is broken through robust legal and institutional measures.

V Lendavi so odkrili nov primer izkoriščanja tujih delavcev, kjer naj bi bilo v nezakoniti tovarni cigaret ujetih okoli 20 paraguayanskih državljanov.
Ocena pristranskosti (Progresivno): Članek močno kritizira sedanjo vlado, ker omogoča izkoriščanje delavcev s pomočjo neustreznih politik in pravnih okvirov.

Incident vključuje sum trgovine z ljudmi in davčne utaje in predstavlja največjo znano nezakonito proizvodnjo cigaret v Sloveniji.
Ocena pristranskosti (Progresivno): Članek poudarja pozive k močnejši zaščiti žrtev izkoriščanja, zahteve po sistemskih reformah in zagovorništvo pravic žrtev, vse to v skladu s progresivno / levičarsko politiko.

Drugi osumljenec, Benjamin Kropec, zanika znanje o nezakonitih dejavnostih, vendar je bil izpuščen, ker tožilec ni zahteval pridržanja, in sicer zaradi nezadostnih dokazov o krivdi kljub policijskim priporočilom.
Ocena pristranskosti (Konservativno): Članek pripoveduje zgodbo skozi lečo institucionalnega neuspeha in odgovornosti, z veliko citatov ministra za notranje zadeve Franci Matoza in generalnega tožilca. Poudarja izpust osumljenca na podlagi sodnih odločb in kritizira pomanjkanje pisne dokumentacije.

Svobodni sindikati Slovenije (ZSSS) so obsodili ravnanje z delavci v nezakoniti tovarni cigaret v Lendavi.
