According to Mr McGrath, the man, who is also in poor health, received a letter suggesting his payment plan might be canceled and implying his gas supply could be disconnected. The TD explained that the pensioner had been placed on a weekly payment plan of €75 to address a total arrears of around €800. However, he had only been able to pay €80 per week, leading to a balance of €16.41. The letter, which informed him of this shortfall, reportedly caused him considerable distress, as he feared losing his essential services. Mr McGrath emphasized that such incidents were occurring more frequently than they should, describing the treatment of vulnerable individuals as unacceptable. The pensioner’s situation appears to have improved, as the full amount has since been settled. Mr McGrath noted that the company, Electric Ireland, which is operated by ESB, reported substantial financial gains in the previous year, including €636 million in pre-tax profits and a record €2.7 billion in capital investment. He criticized the disparity between these figures and the alleged intimidation tactics used against the pensioner, calling the situation incomprehensible. Electric Ireland stated that it does not provide commentary on individual customer accounts but confirmed it has requested the relevant details to conduct a review of the case.
