The Nigerian House of Representatives has launched an official inquiry into xenophobic violence targeting Nigerians in South Africa, with a focus on assessing the human and economic toll of these attacks and seeking avenues for compensation. The move was initiated following a motion introduced by Rep. Babajimi Benson, who represents Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State. The resolution marks a formal step toward addressing long-standing grievances related to the safety and rights of Nigerian expatriates in South Africa. The motion was adopted during a session of the House, signaling a commitment to evaluate the damage caused by repeated instances of xenophobic aggression. Benson highlighted that the lack of a thorough evaluation of casualties, property destruction and economic losses has hindered Nigeria's ability to pursue justice and secure reparations for affected citizens. He emphasized the historical significance of Nigeria’s contribution to South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, including financial aid, diplomatic backing and participation in international organizations such as the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity. Despite this shared history, Benson noted that Nigerians living in South Africa continue to face targeted violence, often rooted in xenophobic sentiments. Benson outlined several documented incidents of xenophobic attacks dating back to 2008, including major episodes in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021. These events reportedly led to fatalities, business closures, forced displacement and strained bilateral relations. He warned that ongoing anti-foreigner campaigns in South Africa have intensified fears among Nigerian communities, impacting their livelihoods and investment prospects. According to Benson, past diplomatic responses, such as public condemnation and protest notes, have lacked the necessary depth to provide actionable data for policy-making or legal recourse. In response to the motion, the House has tasked two committees, the Committee on Integration and Cooperation in Africa and Diaspora, and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, with conducting a detailed investigation. These panels will assess the number of casualties, quantify property losses and evaluate the broader economic consequences of xenophobic acts affecting Nigerian residents. They will also compile records of properties left behind due to the attacks and propose strategies aimed at holding perpetrators accountable, securing compensation for victims and enhancing protections for Nigerian nationals in South Africa. A final report is expected within four weeks, after which the House will consider further legislative steps. The relationship between Nigeria and South Africa remains robust, underpinned by extensive trade, diplomatic engagement and regional collaboration. However, periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence against foreign nationals have occasionally disrupted this dynamic. The current inquiry reflects an attempt to address these recurring challenges through structured, evidence-based interventions. As the committees begin their work, the outcome could influence future policies aimed at safeguarding the interests of Nigerian expatriates and reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two nations.
