The Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), the Congress party's overseas wing, has accused the central government of applying a "double standard" in granting approval for the Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s U.S. visit while rejecting similar requests from Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. According to reports, the IOC criticized the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for its handling of the two separate applications, which both sought permission for high-level diplomatic engagement abroad. Patel, a leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), departed for an official trip to the United States and Canada on August 16. His itinerary includes efforts to promote the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027, set for January. The trip aims to attract international attention and investment to Gujarat, highlighting the state’s potential as a hub for business and innovation. Reddy, meanwhile, had planned to travel to the U.S. following a 10-day visit to the United Kingdom and the U.S., which began earlier this month. However, the MEA denied his request, forcing him to cut short his plans and return to Hyderabad instead of continuing to Boston. The MEA cited its policy of assessing the appropriateness of each visit based on the role of the visiting dignitary and the purpose of the trip. A spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, clarified that Reddy’s proposed U.S. activities did not align with these criteria, although his visit to the UK received approval. In response to the MEA’s decision, Reddy emphasized that his intended U.S. visit was tied to the Centre’s New Education Policy. He argued that bringing top-tier global institutions to Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, would provide much-needed opportunities for young Indians seeking quality education and training. “This initiative is about addressing the aspirations of our youth and building a better future,” he stated. The IOC expressed disappointment with the MEA’s stance, asserting that the rejection of Reddy’s application undermines broader goals of national development. In a statement, the IOC USA condemned the use of political or administrative tactics to obstruct legitimate efforts aimed at advancing education, investment, and innovation. It called for an end to political rivalries that could hinder the progress of India’s youth and regional development. While Patel’s delegation continues with its planned engagements in the U.S., including discussions with institutions like Harvard University, MIT, Northeastern University, and Virginia Tech, Reddy’s team has shifted focus back to Hyderabad. The state government has instructed its officials to proceed with their scheduled meetings and negotiations, despite the setback in Reddy’s personal travel plans. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between different political factions within the country, particularly regarding how resources and international exposure are allocated among states. As the debate over the prioritization of political interests versus developmental goals intensifies, public discourse has also turned toward whether such matters should be resolved through non-partisan channels. A recent poll asked respondents whether educational and developmental initiatives should take precedence over political competition, yielding mixed responses. Some supported the idea of placing development above politics, while others argued that political considerations are essential in shaping national priorities.
