A new study reveals that extreme wildfires have killed nearly one in five mature giant sequoias, according to research published in Nature Communications. The findings highlight how prescribed burns, also known as controlled burns, can significantly improve the survival rates of these iconic trees. The study, conducted across 19 groves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, examined the impact of wildfires during the 2020 and 2021 fire seasons, when over 6.8 million acres burned in California. The researchers tracked the fate of 26,403 mature giant sequoias, finding that 19% of the total population was lost due to the fires. Giant sequoias, native to the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, are among the tallest and oldest living organisms on Earth. Some individuals can exceed 300 feet in height and 30 feet in diameter.
