A red warning has been issued for the Split region after heavy rainfall triggered sudden rises in sea levels along the coast. According to reports, water surged onto roads in just seconds, with more than 30 centimeters of seawater flowing over them in one second. The situation unfolded in several coastal areas, including the old town of Hvar and the island of Korčula, where residents described dramatic changes in the sea level. In the old town of Hvar, witnesses reported a rapid rise in the sea level, reaching over 1.5 meters within minutes. A local resident told the news outlet Žurnal24 that during this time, water flowed over the road near the city’s waterfront at a rate of more than 30 centimeters per second. This was part of a series of quick fluctuations in the sea level, which included both rises and drops. Similar conditions were observed on the island of Korčula, where a resident noted that the sea reached their homes within six minutes. The Croatian State Hydrometeorological Service issued the highest level of warning for the Split region due to the heavy rains. These weather conditions have led to intense storms sweeping through the Istrian peninsula, particularly affecting the areas around Rovinj and Pulj. In some parts, waves reached up to five centimeters in height, while strong winds caused damage to vehicles, camping equipment, and other structures in the camp at Amarin. Residents living near the coastline are being advised to exercise caution and monitor radar images for further developments. The storm system has also prompted environmental authorities to issue an orange warning for the southern and western parts of Croatia. The impact of these weather patterns highlights the vulnerability of coastal regions to sudden changes in sea levels and weather intensity. The meteorological phenomenon described as a “cunami-like” wave, though not a true tsunami, involves rapid and forceful changes in sea levels due to atmospheric pressure shifts. Such events can lead to unexpected flooding and disruption of daily life. In Hvar, the situation was exacerbated by the combination of high waves and strong winds, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and drivers alike. Local officials and emergency services are working to assess the extent of the damage and provide support to affected communities. While there are no immediate reports of major injuries or fatalities, the incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in coastal areas prone to such weather extremes. As the storm continues to affect different parts of the country, further updates are expected.
