A survey conducted by the Civey institute found that 38 percent of respondents felt their sense of safety had clearly or somewhat decreased since last weekend, while 54 percent believed it remained unchanged. Seven percent even felt safer. In response, Hamburg police revised their security plan, doubling the number of officers deployed compared to the previous year’s event. The attack in Berlin was carried out by Abdul B., a 21-year-old who drove into pedestrians and allegedly attacked others with a machete before being shot dead by police on Sunday evening after attacking them. The Christopher Street Day commemorates events in June 1969 in New York City, when members of the LGBTQ+ community resisted a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Greenwich Village neighborhood. This uprising is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The day is celebrated globally each year, drawing attention to issues of equality, freedom, and acceptance. In Amsterdam, preparations for the World Pride festival continued despite the recent violence in Germany. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who is openly homosexual, addressed attendees at the start of the Canal Parade, urging young LGBTQ+ individuals to come out. He emphasized that while coming out can be difficult, it leads to greater freedom and happiness. Jetten noted that the attack in Berlin highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community worldwide. The World Pride event, held for the first time in the Netherlands, includes multiple days of activities and is considered the largest gathering of the global queer community. Security measures have been intensified in Amsterdam following the Berlin incident, with close collaboration among police, prosecutors, and city officials to ensure safety. Amsterdam’s Pride parade, known as the Canal Parade, features colorful boats decorated with flags and banners, traveling along the city's canals. According to organizers, approximately 500,000 visitors are expected to attend the boat procession alone.
