The liquidation of Propal S.A., a well-known company based in the Valle del Cauca region of Colombia, has raised concerns among local authorities and workers. The decision was approved during an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on July 31 and formally submitted to the Superintendence of Societies on the same day. According to the company, this move comes after three years of progressively worsening financial conditions due to external factors beyond its control. These include low market prices, the appreciation of the Colombian peso against the U.S. dollar, and rising production costs. The situation worsened further with the implementation of anti-dumping measures, which imposed additional tariffs on imported goods. Propal S.A. stated that it had explored various options to keep the operation running, including efficiency and cost-saving plans, collaboration with specialized firms, seeking investors, and diversifying business lines. However, a technical and financial analysis concluded that continuing operations would deepen losses and damage the company's assets. The company operates two plants in Yumbo, Valle del Cauca, and Guachené, Cauca, regions known for their sugar production. It employs over 1,200 workers and generates annual consolidated revenues of 1.163 trillion pesos (based on 2023 figures). Its unique approach focuses on using alternative fibers such as sugarcane bagasse and rice husks to produce high-quality paper and cardboard from organic waste generated by other industries. More than 80 percent of the fiber used in its products comes from these alternative sources. Gubernatorial officials expressed deep concern over the closure, emphasizing its impact on the region’s economy and employment. Gobernadora Dilian Francisca Toro acknowledged the significance of Propal as an emblematic enterprise within the Carvajal Organization, noting its long-standing contributions to the development, job creation, and economic growth of Valle del Cauca. She praised the efforts made by the Carvajal family to sustain the company and highlighted their valuable contribution to the area’s economic and social progress. The governor emphasized that the closure poses a significant challenge for more than 400 employees and their families who now face uncertainty regarding their livelihoods. Although they will receive the appropriate benefits during this process, the loss of jobs directly affects household stability. Toro reiterated her commitment to fostering an environment conducive to investment, business stability, and job creation in the department.
