Croatian midfielder Robert Ljubacic committed a penalty error before providing the decisive assist for Austrian side LASK in their unexpected 3-2 victory over Sporting Lisbon. The match served as the third round fixture of the Champions League league phase, played on Wednesday evening in Lisbon. Although the Portuguese hosts were heavy favorites, the visitors secured a historic win that marked LASK’s first ever success in the elite competition’s league stage. The game began poorly for Ljubacic, who was booked after fouling Nestory Irankunda inside the box in the fifth minute. Luis Suarez converted the resulting spot kick to give Sporting an early lead. However, the Austrian response was swift. In the 15th minute, Christoph Lang struck a precise shot from the edge of the area to equalize, setting the score at 1-1 at halftime. Ljubacic redeemed himself in the second half with a crucial pass in the 63rd minute. His delivery found Sasa Kalajdzic, who finished into the far corner to put LASK ahead 2-1. The visitors extended their advantage just five minutes later. Krystof Daneck received the ball on the right flank, entered the penalty area, and fired into the near post to make it 3-1. Sporting mounted a late comeback attempt, with Suarez scoring his second goal in the 89th minute to narrow the gap to 3-2. Despite pressure in the final moments, the home team failed to find an equalizer, leaving LASK with a surprising three points. Statistical data highlighted Ljubacic’s mixed performance. Beyond the foul and the winning assist, he completed 40 of 45 passes, won seven of 11 duels, and recovered possession six times. This result continues his positive run in European competition, having scored against Liverpool in the previous round. This victory holds historical significance for LASK, which qualified for this season’s Champions League through a dramatic qualifying campaign. After losing 3-0 away to Celtic, the Austrian club returned home to win 5-1 after extra time. Their league phase journey had been difficult prior to this win, including a 1-0 defeat to AEK Athens and a 6-3 loss to Liverpool. In other matches from the same round, Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Arsenal, while Real Madrid defeated RB Leipzig 4-1. Club Brugge, managed by Croatian coach Ivan Leko, beat Lens 3-0 to extend their winning streak to six games in all competitions. Goals for Brugge came from Hans Vanaken, Joaquin Seys, and Carlos Forbs. Other results included Inter beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0, Betis defeating Feyenoord 1-0, and Aston Villa overcoming Viking 3-1. Sporting enters future fixtures with six points from two wins against Galatasaray and Lens before this defeat. LASK moves to four points. The match concluded with the Austrian team celebrating their breakthrough moment in top-tier European football history.
