The government of Río Negro has announced plans to introduce a new law allowing the formal sale of wild game meat, including wild boar and deer, which have become invasive species causing environmental and economic damage in the province. The initiative, set to be submitted to the provincial legislature in August, aims to create a regulated market for these animals while ensuring food safety standards. The proposal also includes the potential inclusion of guanaco meat, though this will depend on whether its harvesting would affect the population dynamics of native species. The move comes amid growing concerns over the ecological and agricultural impacts of invasive wildlife. Wild boars and deer, introduced to the region, have proliferated and caused substantial losses to farmers through crop destruction and competition with livestock. According to Norberto Tabaré Bassi, secretary of Agriculture of Río Negro, the project does not encourage breeding of these animals but rather seeks to utilize existing wild populations for human consumption under strict health controls. The goal is to provide a legal framework for processing and selling such meats, thereby reducing the risks associated with informal trade. The legislation will require modifications to the Provincial Meat Law, aligning current regulations with the need for safe handling and traceability of products derived from wild animals. This change follows ongoing efforts to revise the existing laws, accelerated by the demand for a legal structure that supports the commercialization of wild game meat. The revised law will apply broadly to all meat-producing species, but the focus on wild animals reflects the urgent need to address their increasing numbers and negative effects. Currently, the informal trade of wild boar and other wild meats persists, yet regulatory hurdles prevent it from operating within a legal framework. The proposed reforms aim to simplify procedures for small-scale processors while maintaining necessary sanitary requirements. Officials emphasize that the adjustments will ensure minimal bureaucratic burdens while upholding quality and safety standards. A key component of the plan involves guaranteeing the safety of the meat. Bassi noted that wild boars can carry trichinosis, similar to domestic pigs, so each animal must undergo appropriate testing before being sold. This measure underscores the commitment to public health alongside the economic benefits of managing invasive species. Wild boars have become a significant issue, leading to considerable financial losses for farmers due to their feeding habits and encroachment into cultivated areas. In some cases, they have even entered urban zones, as observed in Bariloche. To tackle this challenge, the Subsecretariat of Wildlife is collaborating with the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and the National University of Río Negro to assess the economic impact of wild boars. This research will inform strategies aimed at controlling their spread and mitigating their harmful effects on both agriculture and ecosystems.
