The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA) has written to the central government and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), warning of increased risks to Indian flights operating to Gulf destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi due to the escalating conflict in West Asia. The association urged immediate suspension of commercial flights to these regions until a thorough security evaluation is completed by national security agencies and aviation experts. The call comes after renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran reignited tensions in the region. ALPA stated that the security situation has worsened significantly, posing serious threats to civilian aviation. The association emphasized that aircraft flying into or over conflict zones face dangers ranging from direct military action to potential misidentification, missile attacks, electronic warfare, and disruptions to GPS systems. Additionally, the rapid changes in airspace regulations and limited access to up-to-date intelligence further complicate safe operations. This is not the first time ALPA has raised concerns about the safety of flights to the Gulf. In March, the association had previously requested the DGCA to take a cautious stance given the evolving military landscape and rising risks to civil aviation. This latest appeal follows a period of relative calm, during which the conflict between the U.S. and Iran temporarily eased. However, recent developments have prompted ALPA to once again highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive threat assessment before resuming regular operations. ALPA’s letter to the ministry and DGCA outlines several key demands. It calls for an immediate halt to all commercial flights operated by Indian carriers to the affected Gulf destinations until a detailed and independent security analysis is carried out. The association also urges the implementation of robust risk mitigation strategies by airlines, ensuring that insurance policies and emergency protocols remain effective under current conditions. Furthermore, ALPA insists that pilots must be fully briefed on the existing risks and should not be pressured to fly into potentially hazardous airspace for commercial reasons. The association has also offered its support in assisting the ministry and DGCA with technical discussions related to assessing risks associated with operating in conflict zones.
