Starting on July 8, 2026, children aged eight and nine years old are now allowed to use the eGates at UK airports, provided they meet specific criteria. This change aims to make family travel more efficient during the busy summer months. The policy allows children who are eight or nine years old to pass through automated border checkpoints, known as eGates, as long as they hold an eligible passport, are accompanied by an adult, and are at least 120 centimeters tall. This adjustment aligns younger children with older ones who have already been permitted to use these systems. The government estimates that this change could result in up to 1.5 million additional children becoming eligible for eGate usage within the coming year. This development follows a broader initiative by the Home Office to modernize the UK's border infrastructure. The measure was announced in May 2026 as part of a larger plan to enhance the efficiency and security of the country’s border processes. Migration and Citizenship Minister Mike Tapp emphasized the importance of reducing stress for families traveling with young children, stating that the updated system would provide a “swifter and smoother journey home.” Phil Douglas, the Border Force Director General, noted that eGates play a crucial role in maintaining border security. He explained that the expansion of eGate access would enable border officers to focus more effectively on identifying individuals who might pose a risk to national security. At Heathrow Airport, officials have encouraged parents to familiarize themselves with the new guidelines, especially for those traveling with younger children.
