Over two-thirds of parents surveyed by charity Barnardos expressed concern over the high cost of school uniforms, describing them as “outrageous” and “a scandal.” The survey, part of the Back to School Survey 2026, collected responses from 704 parents, representing both primary and secondary school families. More than half of respondents cited worries about overall back-to-school expenses, while over 70% specifically mentioned difficulties in affording uniforms. One parent criticized the requirement for branded clothing, suggesting that “tracksuits should be acceptable,” while another called the situation a “scandal.” The survey highlighted broader financial pressures faced by families. Parents reported challenges in covering essential costs, particularly as many struggled to afford basic necessities such as food and utilities. A secondary school parent lamented that being required to spend €850 on a tablet was “disgraceful,” especially given current economic conditions. This sentiment was echoed by others who felt the burden of purchasing digital devices was unreasonable, especially when schools did not allow alternatives or permitted shopping at different retailers. A key point of contention emerged regarding the back-to-school allowance, which is means-tested and intended to assist families with uniform and footwear costs. However, several parents argued that the system was flawed. One respondent described the allowance as “deeply unfair,” noting that even a small increase in income could disqualify a family from receiving support. This created what some referred to as a “benefits cliff,” where incremental changes in household finances had little impact on eligibility. The charity Barnardos acknowledged these frustrations, stating that more families are expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of adequate support. The survey also uncovered issues related to the procurement of digital devices. Nearly 57% of secondary school parents reported being required to purchase tablets at an average cost of €447 each. Some parents claimed that schools mandated purchases from specific vendors, limiting their ability to seek better prices elsewhere. This practice was viewed as restrictive and potentially exploitative, especially during times of financial hardship. Several respondents emphasized that schools needed to be more responsive to real-world constraints and consider alternative solutions that would ease the financial strain on families. Barnardos National Policy Manager Stephen Moffatt stressed the importance of continued government action to ensure education remains accessible and equitable. He pointed to recent efforts aimed at reducing parental burdens but urged further measures. Among his recommendations were the introduction of mandatory affordable uniform options, a review of how digital devices are integrated into school curricula, and an expansion of eligibility criteria for the back-to-school allowance. These steps, he argued, would help alleviate the growing stress on families and promote a more inclusive educational environment. As the new school year approaches, the findings of the survey underscore the urgent need for policy reforms that address the financial realities of modern parenting. With rising living costs and limited public support, many parents feel increasingly stretched thin. The call for systemic change reflects a broader societal challenge, ensuring that education remains a right rather than a privilege, and that all children can participate fully, regardless of their family’s economic circumstances. The coming months will likely see increased advocacy for these issues, as parents and educators push for meaningful solutions.
