The initiative was officially announced Friday, with members of the Oregon State women’s basketball team submitting a petition to state regulatory authorities, seeking legal recognition for collective bargaining under state law. This effort follows a series of failed attempts to establish similar structures in other collegiate programs. In 2024, a group of women’s basketball players had previously sent letters to leaders of the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences, requesting a formal process to address concerns related to college athletics. Those requests were ultimately rejected, prompting the current wave of unionization activity. Now, more than 100 female athletes have signed union authorization cards with the UCAA, pledging support for collective bargaining and representation in negotiations with their institutions.
