Despite its minuscule size, approximately 2,000 square meters, the island supports a thriving community during the fishing season. The island's unique geography makes it appear more like a cluster of metal huts floating on water than a habitable place. The structures, built from corrugated iron, are tightly packed with little space between them. Narrow paths connect these makeshift homes, allowing just enough room for two people to pass side by side. There are no gardens, open spaces, or recreational areas, every inch of land serves a practical purpose, whether storing fishing gear, housing families, or providing shelter. According to the latest available population data from 2009, Migingo was home to around 131 residents. However, this number fluctuates significantly throughout the year. During the fishing season, which typically spans several months, the island welcomes hundreds of fishermen from neighboring countries, bringing the total population to approximately 500. These visitors come from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, all of whom rely heavily on Lake Victoria for their livelihoods. Fishing is the primary economic activity on Migingo, driven largely by the demand for Nile perch, a fish highly valued in global markets. This species, known for its firm texture and mild flavor, is a major export from the region and provides many fishermen with a stable income. As a result, the island has become a hub for fishing communities, drawing workers from across borders who contribute to its daily life and economy. Despite the challenges posed by the island’s cramped conditions, residents have adapted to their environment. Small shops, bars, and eateries operate within the confines of the island, offering essential services to both permanent and seasonal inhabitants. Water and basic necessities are transported by boats from the mainland, while electricity is generated through generators and solar panels, ensuring access to power even in remote locations. The ownership of Migingo has long been a point of contention between Kenya and Uganda. The dispute over territorial rights has occasionally led to tensions among fishermen and local authorities. However, daily life on the island continues uninterrupted, with dozens of boats setting out each day to fish in Lake Victoria. Their returns bring not only sustenance but also the financial stability needed to sustain the community. As long as Lake Victoria remains abundant in fish, Migingo will continue to stand as one of the world’s most densely populated and unusual settlements. Its existence highlights the ingenuity of those who call it home, turning a small piece of land into a vibrant, self-sustaining microcosm of human life.
