Stefan Eichberger, a promising Austrian downhill skier, has vowed to return to competition after undergoing surgery to repair a torn cruciate ligament in his knee. The 25-year-old athlete, who had previously suffered a similar injury in 2022, posted a video on Instagram showing him skiing with ease near the Matterhorn, asserting that his knee feels “normal” and that he has not lost his ability to ski. His ambitious goal is to compete again in July, despite skepticism from others due to the severity of his latest injury. Eichberger’s injury occurred during a race in Grödnertal, where he sustained a serious knee damage. This marks his second major knee injury in a relatively short professional career. Prior to this setback, he had achieved top ten finishes in several competitions, including a sixth-place finish in Beaver Creek. His performance earned praise from veteran skier Vincent Kriechmayr, who predicted that Eichberger would eventually win a race, highlighting his potential as a future star in Austrian alpine skiing. The injury forced Eichberger into a lengthy rehabilitation period, during which he endured intense pain and struggled to understand why his knee hurt so badly. He described the initial weeks of recovery as particularly difficult, noting that he had anticipated the challenges of returning from a previous knee injury but was unprepared for how long and how hard the process would be. Despite these hardships, Eichberger remained determined, using his experience to push through the physical and emotional toll of recovery. Rehabilitation efforts included regular sessions in a strength training facility and cycling to maintain fitness. Eichberger emphasized his ability to endure tough conditions, stating, “I can really push myself.” His progress was evaluated through a mandatory test conducted by the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), which confirmed that he had reached “top values” physically and was ready to resume training. However, he acknowledged that he still needed to accumulate more downhill experience before competing again. Eichberger will join his teammates for a training camp in Chile, where they will face challenging snow conditions with a snow depth of six meters. He expressed confidence in his skills, saying, “I know I haven’t lost my ability to ski. By the end of the training camp, it should look like real racing again.” His coaches, including speed coach Andreas Evers, believe his return will be beneficial, especially given his comfort with the technical demands of Swiss downhill courses, such as those in Crans-Montana, where the World Championships will take place. The Austrian national team has shown strong support for Eichberger’s comeback, recognizing his importance to the squad. With only two Austrian skiers finishing within the top 20 in the recent World Cup, the team is eager to see Eichberger regain his form ahead of the upcoming season.
