Optical writing of antiferromagnets points toward new storage devices and energy efficient information systems

A German-Japanese research team, including the University of Augsburg, has achieved a major breakthrough by using ultrashort laser pulses to write magnetic information in antiferromagnetic materials without requiring electric currents or magnetic fields.
