OpenAI has significantly reduced pricing for some of its latest AI models in response to growing competition from Chinese firms, according to reports. The U.S.-based company slashed prices for its GPT-5.6 Luna model by up to 80 percent, making it more cost-effective for developers. On Thursday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the price cuts via a post on the social media platform X. He highlighted the new pricing structure for the GPT-5.6 Luna model, which brings API costs down to $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens. API fees refer to the charges developers incur when integrating AI functionalities into their applications and services. Alongside the Luna model, OpenAI also lowered prices for its mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20 percent. The updated rate for Terra stands at $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens. Additionally, the company introduced a “fast mode” for its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model, promising improved performance speeds up to 2.5 times faster than previous versions. These three models were unveiled earlier this month, marking a strategic shift in OpenAI's approach to maintaining its competitive edge. The price reductions have already positioned GPT-5.6 Luna as one of the most cost-efficient options in terms of intelligence per dollar, surpassing several Chinese counterparts such as Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2 and MiniMax’s M3.
