Dobrodelne organizacije poudarjajo širši ekološki vpliv in ugotavljajo znatno krčenje gozdov v regiji. Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis je poudaril naravno regeneracijo gozdov in pozval k natančnemu poročanju o okoljski škodi.

Olympic stadium provides shelter for dogs rescued from Greece wildfires Over 100 dogs rescued from wildfires in Greece are currently being cared for by volunteers at the Megara Olympians Municipal Stadium, where a running track has been converted into a temporary shelter. The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts to combat blazes that have ravaged parts of the Attica region near Athens. Dry conditions and fierce winds reaching speeds of up to 78 miles per hour have fueled the fires, leading to widespread destruction. Firefighters continue battling the flames, with several homes reduced to ashes in the villages of Porto Germeno and Psatha. At the stadium, volunteers have set up a space for the rescued animals, offering them food, water, and rest. Dogs can be seen resting after being tended to by caretakers who monitor their health and well-being. More than 110 animals have been accommodated at the venue since the wildfires began last week, with veterinary teams examining each dog upon arrival to assess any injuries or illnesses. Among the rescued dogs are stray animals and pets still wearing their owners' collars. Charities have raised concerns about the impact of the fires on Greece’s wildlife, highlighting the loss of habitat for species such as wild horses and deer. Environmental data reveals that the Attica region has suffered a 42% reduction in forest cover due to wildfires over the past decade. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the issue, emphasizing that although the damage is severe, forests, particularly those dominated by Aleppo pine, can regenerate naturally with proper care and protection. Mitsotakis called for accurate reporting on the extent of the damage, urging authorities to provide detailed data to counter perceptions that the region’s forests are nearly entirely destroyed or that the harm is irreversible. He acknowledged the significant environmental toll of the fires but stressed the importance of supporting nature’s recovery process. Authorities have reported that 33 individuals were arrested across Greece between June 29 and August 2 for causing fires, with 30 charged with negligence and three suspected of arson. Negligence cases often involve agricultural activities, such as welding, which was conducted despite local restrictions. Aerial operations using planes and helicopters have been deployed to douse hotspots when favorable wind conditions permit. Costas Tsingas, head of the Greek Firefighters Association, noted that the situation remains challenging, stating, “The goal is for the day to end better than it started.” He highlighted the high fire load in the affected areas and warned that the risk increases as the day progresses.
