The reconstruction of the Vinogradska Oncology Center at Sestre Milosrdnice Clinical Hospital is nearing completion, with officials confirming that all three linear accelerators will soon be operational, eliminating the waiting list for radiotherapy treatments. The project, which began in 2023, has been funded through the European Union’s Solidarity Fund and partially supported by energy efficiency measures from the National Energy Efficiency Program. The new facility includes a state-of-the-art radiation therapy center spanning two floors and covering 2,200 square meters. It features modern equipment, spacious waiting areas, green terraces, and accessible entrances with lifts. Two of the new linear accelerators have recently been installed, while the third has been operating since June 2025 in a repurposed space previously occupied by the old single accelerator. The new building houses advanced technology essential for delivering high-quality cancer treatment. The linear accelerators, referred to by medical staff as “linaks”, are sophisticated devices requiring specialized training for their operation. Dr. Željko Soldić, deputy head of the Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Clinic and head of the Radiation Therapy Department, guided visitors through the facility, emphasizing the qualitative and quantitative leap brought by these new technologies. He noted that the updated methods allow for more effective treatment with greater protection of surrounding tissues during radiation sessions, a critical factor in improving patient outcomes. The facility's design reflects both functionality and comfort. Patients can access the waiting areas via a direct entrance, and the spaces offer views of landscaped terraces equipped with seating. The new radiation therapy center is fully integrated into the hospital’s infrastructure, ensuring seamless care delivery. The existing structure was renovated to accommodate the new equipment, including the conversion of a former bunker into a functional treatment area. This transformation highlights the hospital’s commitment to upgrading its oncological services to meet contemporary standards. The project represents a major investment in healthcare infrastructure aimed at enhancing accessibility and quality of care. With the addition of three linear accelerators, the center is now capable of handling a significantly higher volume of patients than before. The transition from a single to multiple accelerators marks a shift toward more efficient and personalized treatment options. Medical professionals have emphasized the importance of ongoing education and training to ensure optimal utilization of the new technology. This includes regular updates on the latest advancements in radiation therapy protocols and safety procedures. The completed facility is expected to serve as a model for other hospitals seeking to improve their oncology departments. Its success could influence future investments in similar projects across Croatia. Officials have expressed confidence that the new center will reduce wait times and provide better service to cancer patients. The integration of modern diagnostic tools such as the CT simulator further enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment planning. These upgrades align with broader efforts to modernize healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes through technological innovation. As the final stages of the reconstruction near completion, the focus shifts to ensuring smooth operations and continued improvement of services. Staff are preparing for the full operational capacity of all three accelerators, which will be achieved shortly after the current phase concludes. The hospital plans to monitor performance metrics and gather feedback from patients and medical teams to refine processes further. This approach underscores a long-term vision for sustainable growth and excellence in oncological care. The new center stands ready to deliver cutting-edge treatment options to patients in need.
