A German semiconductor manufacturer has announced the opening of its largest individual investment in company history, with the launch of a new chip factory in Dresden. The facility, named “Smart Power Fab,” is set to create more than 1,000 jobs and significantly boost production capacity for Infineon in Germany. The project, valued at around five billion euros, marks a major step forward for Europe’s technological sovereignty and industrial capabilities. Construction of the plant began in early May 2023, with work completed three months ahead of schedule. The factory will specialize in producing semiconductors used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, data centers, and industrial infrastructure. These chips will be manufactured on 300-millimeter silicon wafers, a standard widely used in advanced electronics. Director Jochen Hanebeck emphasized that the plant represents a turning point for Dresden, Germany, and the broader European tech sector.
