In England and Wales, the summer has been marked by extreme heat and minimal rainfall, setting records for the driest July in nearly 200 years. The Met Office reported that more than half of England and all of Wales are in drought, with some areas receiving less than one millimeter of rain during the entire month. This climatic anomaly has exacerbated the wildfire risk, contributing to the widespread devastation observed across the region. Australian pilot Alex Pay, based in a Greek airbase, described the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate action upon receiving a fire call.
