The Croatian Police Union (SPH) has condemned the violent behavior of a group of fans during a match-day procession in Split ahead of a football game between Hajduk and Ajax. The group was heard chanting antisemitic and Nazi-related slogans, including calls to "kill Jews," references to Auschwitz, and demands for Adolf Hitler to rise again. The union called for stronger measures against such hooliganism and extreme behavior, emphasizing that the safety of citizens and the reputation of Croatia should take precedence over individuals who find courage only in crowds and later seek protection from the state they attack. The incident occurred on Thursday as fans of Hajduk marched toward Poljud stadium before the match against Ajax. According to media reports, the procession included chants such as "Gazi Židove" ("Kill the Jews"), "Auschwitz," "Ustaj, Adolfe" ("Rise, Adolf"), and "Ajmo, ustaše" ("Come, Ustashas"). A yellow car with an Ajax logo was at the front of the march. The police confirmed that such chants were recorded and that a criminal investigation had been launched to identify those responsible. The SPH highlighted the risks faced by police officers during public gatherings and sporting events, noting previous incidents involving attacks on police, including on highways, which endangered both officers and other road users. They warned that while this particular incident did not result in direct harm to police, similar situations could arise again if the behavior of certain fan groups is not addressed. The SPH emphasized that such actions not only endanger public order but can also damage Croatia's international image. It urged authorities to identify those behind organized disorder, attacks on police, and spreading hate messages under the guise of supporting a team. The union reiterated its stance that there is no place for extremist or violent behavior in either sports or public life. The government has also condemned the incident, with the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs stating that antisemitism has no place in Croatian society and calling for accountability for those responsible. The police have confirmed that the chants included elements of illegal behavior and that an investigation is underway to determine the identities of those involved. The SPH called on fans to return to proper sportsmanship and to focus on what they consider true fan culture. It noted that Croatia has much to be proud of in its fan culture and urged the country to present itself positively to the world, rather than through the scenes broadcast by major global media outlets.
