At least ten people have died in severe weather conditions affecting central and northern Chile, according to reports from local authorities. Heavy rains triggered widespread flooding and landslides, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. Over 19,000 houses were damaged, with estimated losses exceeding $400 million in agriculture, infrastructure, and residential properties. The situation has prompted emergency measures, including the declaration of a state of exception in the region of Coquimbo. The disaster unfolded over several days, with torrential rainfall overwhelming drainage systems and causing rivers to overflow. In the worst-hit area of Coquimbo, images from the air revealed catastrophic scenes, with once-familiar landmarks transformed into vast bodies of water. A popular recreational park was turned into a lake of mud and sludge, highlighting the scale of the destruction. Authorities confirmed that the decision to declare a state of exception was made after assessing the need for urgent intervention in affected regions. President José Antonio Kast stated that the government had evaluated the necessity of declaring a state of emergency and decided to implement such measures in the Coquimbo region. Flooding has left numerous homes submerged, roads and streets blocked, and basic public services disrupted. More than 99,000 residents remain isolated, with search efforts ongoing for several missing individuals. Emergency response teams have been deployed to rescue stranded citizens. Approximately 240 people have been saved so far through coordinated efforts involving medical teams. Evacuees have been relocated to relatives' homes or community shelters. Military helicopters have transported the bodies of the deceased, while soldiers use trucks to assist in evacuating residents from the hardest-hit areas. Residents describe the chaos as unprecedented. “The situation is very serious. The stream overflowed its banks, and the water kept taking everything away,” one resident recounted. “The streets and houses were flooded. The government caused complete chaos, but thank God the firefighters and military arrived, using helicopters to evacuate people.” Another survivor described the emotional toll, stating, “It was terrible because there were deaths. Even those who weren’t injured were equally affected. This is a tragedy for the entire community. I hope the authorities will finally act, repair the roads, and restore electricity supply.” Local officials noted that the intensity of the rainfall exceeded historical records in parts of the Coquimbo region. The weather system affected ten of the sixteen regions in Chile, with heavy rain continuing to pose risks. Emergency services continue to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts, though challenges persist due to the extent of the devastation. As the recovery process begins, communities face the daunting task of rebuilding and restoring normalcy. The impact of this extreme weather underscores the vulnerability of regions prone to sudden climatic shifts. With more than a thousand displaced and critical infrastructure damaged, the road to recovery will require sustained support and resources.
