The zoo confirmed that ten of the sixteen lions showed symptoms such as reduced activity and dehydration, with three succumbing to the conditions. The deaths were reported in quick succession, with one lion dying on Tuesday, another on Friday, and the third on Sunday. According to Euronews, the three deceased lions included a three-year-old male, an 11-year-old female, and a 15-year-old female named Luen. The remaining lions are currently receiving treatment. A veterinarian at the zoo stated that signs of dehydration and failure of multiple organs pointed toward heatstroke as the likely cause of death. The zoo has temporarily closed its safari-style viewing area to the public, which typically allows visitors to ride through enclosures in specially equipped buses. This measure was taken to ensure better control over environmental conditions within the enclosure. Officials noted that while African lions are generally more resilient to high temperatures, the combination of intense heat and humidity in Japan makes them particularly vulnerable. The unusual weather pattern has caught the zoo off guard. After a period of heavy rainfall at the end of July, temperatures soared unexpectedly, creating conditions that are uncommon for this time of year. The zoo has implemented several measures to combat the heat, including increased water spraying, improved ventilation systems, and the installation of climate control devices. Japan has been experiencing extreme heatwaves in recent weeks, with temperatures reaching unprecedented levels. Between July 20th and 26th, approximately 18,600 people were hospitalized due to heat-related illnesses, with 45 declared dead upon arrival at hospitals. While annual fatalities from heat exposure in Japan average around 1,300, authorities aim to halve this number by 2030 through targeted interventions. Zoo officials emphasized that they are working closely with veterinary experts to monitor the health of the surviving lions and adjust their care strategies accordingly. They also highlighted the importance of public awareness regarding the dangers of extreme heat, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.
