Jess Bache, a 25-year-old mother from Devon, was taken to hospital after wearing a pair of Primark sandals for just 40 minutes. The incident occurred shortly after she purchased the sandals from a Torquay branch of the store on June 16. On July 9, she embarked on a brief walk in the sandals, during which she developed a blister the size of a five pence coin. Concerns escalated when she began experiencing fever and her foot swelled significantly. By July 13, Jess visited the Accident and Emergency department at Torbay Hospital in Devon for treatment. Medical staff diagnosed her with cellulitis, a bacterial infection of the skin that requires antibiotic treatment. According to the NHS, cellulitis causes pain, heat, swelling, and redness, though these symptoms may be less noticeable on darker skin tones. The condition can also lead to blisters, flu-like symptoms, and swollen, painful lymph nodes. Photographs of Jess’s foot reveal severe swelling and the presence of orange pus oozing from the affected area. Describing her ordeal, Jess stated that the blister appeared normal initially, but by Saturday, her entire foot had become inflamed. On Sunday, she contacted emergency services via 111, expressing fear that her foot might rupture under pressure. She described the sensation as akin to having pins and needles, with the blister resembling a blood clot and continuously secreting pus. By Monday, Jess found herself unable to walk, prompting her to seek immediate medical attention. She likened the feeling to her foot being filled with liquid, warning that it could potentially burst under pressure. Jess mentioned feeling feverish and fearing that she might have contracted a serious infection. Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors applied a dressing and confirmed the diagnosis of cellulitis, noting that it is a condition that can progress to sepsis if left untreated. Jess expressed concern that her condition could have worsened significantly if she had delayed seeking help. She emphasized that she had previously had no issues purchasing footwear from Primark, making the incident particularly alarming. Despite the antibiotics beginning to take effect, she worries about the possibility of a lasting scar. Following her hospital visit, Jess shared her experience on TikTok, where the video quickly gained traction. Within hours, the post received approximately 200,000 views and garnered 65 comments. Many viewers shared similar stories, including one individual who noted the same issue occurred on the same part of the foot and vowed never to wear the sandals again. Others recounted experiencing similar effects months earlier, some still bearing visible marks. A representative from Primark responded to the situation, stating that the company takes product quality and customer comfort seriously. They reiterated their commitment to working with suppliers and quality control teams to maintain high standards. The spokesperson encouraged customers to reach out directly for further assistance. Jess has since decided against purchasing inexpensive sandals, opting instead for more costly options. She urges others to consider the potential risks associated with budget-friendly footwear, especially during the warmer months. She hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale for fellow shoppers, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing comfort and safety when selecting footwear.
