The European Union mission in Pristina has warned the authorities of Kosovo to immediately halt the demolition of weekend homes owned by Serbs near Lake Gazivoda, citing violations of legal procedures. The EU mission issued its warning on Wednesday after reports emerged that workers from the Pristina-based company Ibar-Lepenac had begun tearing down properties along the lake's shore with the assistance of heavy police forces. According to local media, 11 structures belonging to Serbs are set to be demolished, allegedly built without proper permits. The Serbian government has condemned the action as a new act of illegality by Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti. The Government Office for Kosovo and Metohija described the demolitions as unlawful, shameless, and aimed at revenge against Serbs. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s declaration of independence in February 2008 and considers it part of its territory, referring to it as the "Southern Serbian Province." The EU mission urged an immediate stop to all further demolitions, forced removals of property, or seizures of assets until concerns regarding adherence to legal procedures, proportionality, ownership rights, human rights, and effective legal remedies are adequately addressed. It called on Kosovo’s authorities to promptly engage with affected residents and municipalities to explore lawful solutions. The mission also advised the police to remain strictly within their legal mandate, based on clear requests or properly documented decisions by competent bodies. The ongoing demolitions and contentious property claims have raised serious concerns over the rule of law. In accordance with Kosovo’s European path, the EU expects the authorities to respond urgently and transparently to these concerns and ensure such actions do not recur. The mission noted that a lack of respect for legal procedures has been observed in other cases on the northern parts of Kosovo in recent months. The situation escalated on Tuesday when Ibar-Lepenac employees began the demolition process with police support. The company reportedly claims the structures were built illegally, though the owners dispute this. Local Serb communities have expressed alarm over the potential loss of property and the broader implications for their presence in the region. Kosovo’s government faces mounting pressure from both international actors and domestic stakeholders. The EU mission emphasized the need for transparency and due process, urging the authorities to avoid measures that could undermine trust in the rule of law. The mission reiterated that any resolution must comply with legal standards and protect the rights of all citizens. Serbian officials have repeatedly criticized Kosovo’s leadership for alleged discrimination and unlawful actions targeting the ethnic minority. They argue that the current developments represent a continuation of policies they describe as hostile toward Serbs living in Kosovo. The Serbian government has called for dialogue and international mediation to address the issue. Local Serb representatives have voiced concerns about the safety of their communities and the potential for escalation. Some have suggested that the demolitions could lead to increased tensions and unrest in the area. Meanwhile, Kosovo’s authorities have defended their actions, stating that they are enforcing laws and regulations applicable to all residents. The EU mission has stressed the importance of maintaining stability and ensuring that all actions taken are consistent with international norms and principles. It has urged Kosovo’s leaders to demonstrate commitment to the rule of law and respect for minority rights. The mission will continue monitoring the situation closely and engaging with relevant parties to prevent further deterioration of relations.
