Ministri EU o Ukrajini, Gazi in novih varnostnih izzivih

European Union foreign ministers convened in an informal meeting in Ireland over the weekend, focusing on critical geopolitical challenges including Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and security concerns in the Middle East. The gathering, known as the Gymnich format, took place in Wicklow, Ireland, under the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union. The session was organized in collaboration with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and aimed to facilitate open and strategic discussions among member states' foreign affairs ministers. The two-day meeting brought together officials from all 27 EU countries, including Croatia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Gordan Grlić Radman. Discussions centered around the EU’s continued support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, as well as potential measures to increase pressure on Moscow to end the war and achieve a just and lasting peace. The ministers emphasized the importance of maintaining a unified front in response to the ongoing conflict, highlighting the need for stronger coordination and collective action within the bloc. A major portion of the talks focused on developments in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis has worsened due to ongoing hostilities. The ministers expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions for civilians and discussed possible ways the EU could provide more robust support to Palestinian authorities. Additionally, the group addressed tensions in the region surrounding Iran and the Gulf, including recent escalations linked to conflicts in the area. The ministers also deliberated on the broader implications of these regional dynamics on global stability and security. Security issues related to maritime navigation were another key topic of discussion. The ministers examined the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for international trade, and debated how the EU can enhance its capacity to respond to increasingly complex security and geopolitical challenges through coordinated actions. They considered strategies to improve the effectiveness and agility of the EU’s external policies, including greater engagement in multilateral forums and partnerships with international allies. The Gymnich meetings occur twice annually and differ from formal Council of Foreign Affairs sessions in that they do not result in binding decisions or official conclusions. Instead, they serve as platforms for open dialogue and strategic exchange, helping shape future priorities and policies for the European Union. These informal gatherings allow ministers to explore diverse perspectives and build consensus on pressing issues before formal decision-making processes take place. Under the Irish presidency, the Council of the European Union is guided by the motto “Ní neart go cur le chéile,” meaning “Strength lies in unity.” This principle underscores three main priorities: competitiveness, values, and security. Supporting Ukraine, strengthening European security, and developing relationships with neighbors and partners worldwide are central to this agenda. Croatia actively participates in discussions aimed at reinforcing European resilience, enhancing the EU’s international standing, and ensuring a united European response to current global crises while respecting international law and protecting civilian populations. The meeting highlighted the EU’s commitment to addressing multifaceted challenges through solidarity and cooperation. As the bloc continues to navigate an increasingly unpredictable international landscape, the outcomes of such informal dialogues will play a crucial role in shaping the EU’s strategic direction and responses to emerging threats.
