Karahantepe, blizu Göbeklitepea, pripada koncentraciji neolitskih naseljev znanih kot 'Kamena brimada', kjer so našli dokaze o sofisticirani iranski umetnosti in velikem gravinskim projektu. Nova skulptura predstavlja tradicionalno, prikazuje človeka na leđima leoparda namesto obrnuto, kar predstavlja nove probleme in simbolične pričevanja tega obdobja.

A team of archaeologists has uncovered a remarkable sculpture dating back approximately 11,000 years at the prehistoric site of Karahantepe in southeastern Turkey. The discovery, made during the 2026 excavation season, presents a human figure seated on the back of a leopard, crafted in an artistic style previously unseen at this location. This unique find raises new questions about the symbolism and beliefs of ancient communities. The sculpture measures around 70 centimeters in length and was found on a stone bench within a smaller circular building with a diameter of roughly three meters. Its base was carefully paved with stones, suggesting a deliberate placement. The positioning of the artifact within such an architectural setting could provide crucial insights into its purpose and the activities taking place in the area. Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy described the discovery as a “composite sculpture” that will have a significant impact on the scientific community. The excavations are part of Turkey’s “Heritage for the Future” program, according to Heritage Daily. Karahantepe, located near the world-renowned Göbeklitepe, is part of a larger concentration of Neolithic settlements known as the Taş Tepeler, or “Stone Hills.” More than ten sites are included in this project, which investigates a key period more than 10,000 years ago when human communities transitioned from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to settled living. Monumental architecture and sophisticated art from these locations demonstrate that early Neolithic societies were capable of large-scale construction projects and complex symbolic representations long before the emergence of cities, writing, and states. These findings have challenged traditional views, suggesting that the need for building and ritual gatherings may have been a driver of sedentary life rather than a consequence. One of the most intriguing aspects of the newly discovered sculpture is its depiction of an animal, particularly the leopard, as a prominent feature of the region's artistic tradition. However, what makes this find especially notable is the reversal of the typical relationship between humans and animals. Earlier excavations at the same site revealed several sculptures depicting scenes where a human carries a leopard on their back. In contrast, the latest carving presents a human figure sitting atop a leopard. While it remains unclear whether this change conveys a different narrative or social status, the discovery offers archaeologists a fresh clue in understanding how the inhabitants of Karahantepe conceptualized the boundary between humans and powerful wild beasts. Karahantepe and the broader region of the Taş Tepeler are critical to understanding one of the deepest transformations in history. Findings from these sites confirm that Göbeklitepe was not isolated but part of a wider cultural landscape. The new sculpture does not offer definitive answers, but instead raises questions that have elevated this site to prominence: not only did its inhabitants carve stone, but what stories did these astonishing depictions tell over 11,000 years ago?
