The International Energy Agency has issued a warning regarding the continued concentration of critical metal production in China, highlighting potential risks to global supply chains. The agency’s concerns focus on the geopolitical implications of this dependency, which could lead to disruptions in the availability of essential materials needed for renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and other key industries. The warning comes amid growing discussions about diversifying sources of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. These materials are vital for modern manufacturing, yet their extraction and processing remain heavily concentrated in a few countries, with China currently dominating both production and refining processes. According to reports, the International Energy Agency has called for increased investment in alternative suppliers and greater transparency in mining operations to reduce vulnerabilities in the global market. This issue has sparked renewed interest in exploring new sources of these metals, particularly in regions with untapped reserves. Countries such as Canada, Australia, and parts of Africa have been identified as potential candidates for expanding production capacity. However, challenges related to environmental regulations, political stability, and infrastructure limitations continue to hinder progress in these areas. In parallel, another major development has taken place in the energy sector. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved the construction of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP), marking a significant step forward in regional energy integration. This ambitious project, spanning approximately 6,000 kilometers, will traverse thirteen West African nations before connecting to the Maghreb-European Gas Pipeline (GME). Once completed, the pipeline is expected to transport billions of cubic meters of Nigerian gas to Morocco, subsequently linking into European markets through the GME. The approval was announced during an ECOWAS summit held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where leaders signed an intergovernmental agreement supporting the initiative. President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone emphasized the importance of the project, stating that the gas would eventually reach consumers within the region. The pipeline aims to enhance energy security, promote industrialization, and foster economic cooperation among member states. The project, initially proposed in 2016 by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, had faced delays due to logistical and financial hurdles. Its revival follows Algeria's decision to terminate its contract with the GME in 2022, ending the flow of Algerian gas to Spain via Moroccan territory after diplomatic tensions with Rabat. This move created a gap in the European gas supply chain, prompting renewed interest in alternative routes such as the NMGP. The pipeline is also being considered against the backdrop of rising energy prices driven by geopolitical tensions, notably the war in Ukraine. With global demand for fossil fuels increasing, the NMGP represents a strategic effort to strengthen regional energy networks and reduce reliance on external suppliers. Construction of the pipeline is expected to begin in 2028, with initial gas deliveries anticipated by 2031. The estimated cost of the project is around €23 billion, reflecting the scale and complexity of the undertaking. The project will involve the establishment of a joint venture company based in Casablanca and the creation of a governance authority headquartered in Abuja. The NMGP is envisioned as a cornerstone of Africa’s energy strategy, aiming to create a more integrated and resilient energy market across the continent. It also aligns with broader efforts to leverage Africa’s natural resources for sustainable development and economic growth.

Zakaj dejstva (85): The article reports that the International Energy Agency (AIE) has warned about the risks of critical metals production being too concentrated in China. This aligns with cross-source consensus that there is concern over China's dominance in the supply chain for critical minerals. No primary source w

Zakaj objektivnost (78): The article presents the AIE warning as a cautionary note, using neutral language. However, it frames the issue as a risk, which may imply a slight editorial stance favoring diversification efforts.
