A 49-year-old man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday evening, moments before he was due to board an international flight. The arrest occurred over his failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The man is identified as Suliman Carrim, a former North West ANC regional treasurer. He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday, 16 October 2026. The arrest was carried out by the Commissions Recommendations Task Team (CRTT), which is responsible for following up on and investigating matters related to the Madlanga Commission. This commission is currently examining allegations that a cartel has infiltrated the state. Carrim had previously faced scrutiny from the commission after repeatedly failing to appear for questioning. His legal representatives cited medical reasons for his absence, but Carrim declined an independent medical evaluation, raising concerns about his health status. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Carrim had visited shops and eateries in Cape Town, despite being declared medically unfit to testify before the commission. Additionally, he sought to have his testimony heard in camera, meaning in private, which led to further inquiries regarding his connections with various individuals. Carrim admitted to having business dealings with Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala, an individual accused of collaborating with corrupt police officers and associated with the Big Five drug cartel. Another witness who has failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission is former Crime Intelligence officer Feroz Khan. Initially scheduled to testify in early July, Khan was injured in a shooting in Houghton, Johannesburg, shortly before his appearance. His legal team stated that his medical condition hindered his ability to attend some sessions. Recently, the commission announced its intention to file criminal charges against Khan after he again failed to appear despite a subpoena. However, Khan's testimony was postponed following the murder of his uncle, Preggy Padayachee, in Gauteng. The CRTT continues to probe these cases, ensuring compliance with the commission's requirements. The situation remains under active investigation, with further developments anticipated as the legal process unfolds.
