A 22-year-old man from Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland, has been sentenced to 14 years in a maximum-security penal colony by Russian authorities for participating in military operations against Russian forces in Ukraine. Tiernan O’Donovan was found guilty in absentia by the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) earlier this week. The conviction came under Article 359 of the Russian Criminal Code, which addresses the involvement of mercenaries in armed conflicts or military actions. This offense can carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. According to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, O’Donovan arrived in Ukraine in June 2023 and underwent training before joining combat operations against Russian forces near the village of Pervomaiske in Donetsk. He reportedly participated in these activities until the spring of 2025. The prosecution claims that O’Donovan received payment exceeding two million rubles, approximately €21,875—from Ukrainian military authorities. Additionally, the prosecutor stated that O’Donovan had “actively advertised his crimes” on social media, suggesting public exposure of his involvement in the conflict. O’Donovan, who allegedly used the call sign “The Irishman,” remains on the international wanted list. His case highlights the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, particularly regarding individuals who fight for the latter despite being from countries outside the war zone. The Russian authorities have consistently pursued such cases, often citing violations of their national laws and territorial integrity. O’Donovan is associated with the Chosen Company, a volunteer unit commanded by another Irishman, Ryan O’Leary. The Chosen Company has been active in supporting Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022. The unit has drawn members from over 31 countries, though the majority of its fighters are U.S. citizens. The group operates as a multinational force, reflecting the broader international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. The sentencing of O’Donovan underscores the legal measures taken by Russian authorities to deter foreign nationals from engaging in military actions against Russian interests. The DPR, a self-proclaimed republic within eastern Ukraine, has maintained its own judicial system and law enforcement structures, even as it faces international condemnation for its alignment with Russia.
