Kilmallock defeated Na Piarsaigh 3-19 to 1-22 on Sunday evening at the TUS Gaelic Grounds to claim the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship title. This victory marks the thirteenth time the club has raised the John Daly Cup. They dethroned the outgoing champions, Na Piarsaigh, who were seeking their seventh county title in ten years. The result sets up a Munster Club semi-final clash in three weeks, pitting Kilmallock against All-Ireland champions Ballygunner. The match began slowly for the visitors, but Na Piarsaigh dominated the opening ten minutes. Conor Boylan scored twice, while Keith Dempsey and Ronan Lynch added frees each. Peter Casey contributed another score to give the Caherdavin side a 0-5 to 0-0 lead. Keeper Conor Hanley Clarke prevented the margin from widening when he saved a shot from Keith Dempsey in the sixth minute. Kilmallock gradually improved from the middle of the first half. After Mike Foley pointed for Na Piarsaigh in the eleventh minute, the eventual winners recorded seven of the next nine scores. A long-range free by Hanley Clarke drew the teams level seven minutes before half-time. Pierce Connery scored his fourth free of the evening just before the break to put Kilmallock ahead 0-10 to 0-9. Additional frees from Connery and Hanley Clarke extended the lead to three points, ending the first half at 0-12 to 0-9. The interval whistle triggered a confrontation between players and management after Michael Houlihan delivered a late shoulder charge to James Finn. Kilmallock extended their advantage shortly after the restart. Shane O'Brien caught his team's puck-out, burst through the defense, and blasted the ball into the far corner for the game's first goal. Eleven minutes from full time, Conor Boylan, assisted by Will O'Donoghue, threatened again but Hanley Clarke made another save. By the 51st minute, Na Piarsaigh had narrowed the deficit to one point following a point by Mike Foley. However, O'Donoghue converted a goal for Na Piarsaigh seven minutes from the end, giving the city side their first lead in over twenty minutes. Kilmallock responded almost immediately. Forty seconds later, Oisin O'Reilly found the net to restore the visitors' lead. Both sides exchanged points before a high, looped ball into the box was misjudged by the Na Piarsaigh defense. Captain Graeme Mulcahy headed the ball into the net behind Shane Dowling to secure the victory. The final score remained 3-19 to 1-22. James Hickey, the Kilmallock manager, praised his team's dedication following the win. He described the squad as living and dying for hurling, marking a famous day for the club. In contrast, Na Piarsaigh manager Shane O'Neill reflected on his tenure, noting that Sunday's decider was his seventh county final in eight seasons. O'Neill, a former Galway manager, emphasized his personal record with the club, describing it as absolutely sensational. His comments highlighted his belief that there is life beyond inter-county management. The lineup for Kilmallock featured Conor Hanley Clarke in goal, scoring two points from frees. Key scorers included Pierce Connery with eight points from frees, Shane O'Brien with a goal and two points, and Oisin O'Reilly with a goal. Graeme Mulcahy, the captain, added a goal and a point. Other contributors included Killian Hayes, Robbie Egan, Jackie Dwane, Robbie Hanley, Ciarán O'Connor, Mark O'Loughlin, Michael Houlihan, Steven Quirke, Phelim O'Reilly, and Gearoid Enright. Their forward line included Jerome Boylan, Vince Harrington, Emmet McEvoy, Ronan Lynch, Mike Casey, Mike Foley, William O'Donoghue, David Dempsey, Keith Dempsey, Peter Casey, James Finn, Kevin Downes, JJ Carey, and Conor Boylan. Ronan Lynch was the top scorer with five points, including three frees and two 65-meter efforts. Peter Casey also scored five points. Keith Dempsey added three points from frees. William O'Donoghue scored a goal. Substitutions included Will Henn replacing Kevin Downes in the 40th minute, John Fitzgerald replacing Keith Dempsey in the 46th minute, Adrian Breen replacing JJ Carey in the 52nd minute, and Tommy Grimes replacing James Finn in the 58th minute. John O'Halloran from Bruree refereed the match. The contest served as a repeat of the 2022 final. While Na Piarsaigh aimed to extend their recent dominance, Kilmallock sought their first title since 2021. The tactical battle saw Kilmallock turn the game around after a slow start, leveraging effective free-taking and defensive resilience. The decisive moments came in the final quarter, where individual brilliance from O'Brien, O'Reilly, and Mulcahy outweighed Na Piarsaigh's earlier pressure. The atmosphere at the TUS Gaelic Grounds captured the intensity of the rivalry, culminating in the dramatic sequence of goals and counter-goals in the closing stages. The outcome ensures Kilmallock advances to the provincial stage, where they will test their form against the reigning national champions.
