Some seek marriage, others economic stability, and still others aspire to a better life. She also dismissed claims of receiving payment, insisting that the women themselves chose to come. Auntie Shulan Fang, whose role in organizing these trips has become central to the controversy, is believed to manage the logistics of these arrangements. According to the ABC, WeChat messages reveal discussions involving payments of approximately $20,000 related to the marriages. However, the exact distribution of funds and their intended use remain unclear. Aso claimed that the agreements between families in China were orchestrated by Auntie Julie, with the understanding that the cost of the trip would be covered upfront and repaid later. Tongan authorities have begun investigating the activities of the group, which appears to involve multiple women from Tonga being lured to China under the guise of marriage opportunities.
