Letalski promet: Brezplačno sedenje otrok s starši in jasnejše cene prtljage

The European Union has finalized a major revision of airline passenger rights after more than a decade of negotiations. The changes address some of the most inconvenient and often unclear aspects of air travel, including fees for children sitting with their parents, the display of prices for carry-on luggage, procedures during delays and cancellations, and the use of return tickets if a passenger does not utilize their first year of travel. These updates aim to improve transparency and fairness for travelers across the bloc. The new regulations will take effect 12 months and 20 days after they are published in the Official Journal of the EU. Until then, current rules and conditions set by individual airlines will remain in place. The final approval of the legislative act was announced on July 13, 2026, marking the culmination of years of discussion among member states and industry stakeholders. One of the key changes concerns the cost-free seating for children traveling with their accompanying adults. Under the revised rules, children under a certain age, typically defined as under 12—will be allowed to sit beside their parents or guardians without additional charges. This change aims to reduce financial burdens on families while ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards. Another notable update involves the clarity of pricing for carry-on luggage. Airlines must now clearly state the costs associated with carry-on bags before passengers check in. This ensures that travelers can make informed decisions about their baggage allowances and avoid unexpected charges at the airport. The regulation also mandates that all price information be presented in a standardized format, making it easier for consumers to compare options across different carriers. Procedures related to flight delays and cancellations have also been streamlined. Passengers will receive clearer communication regarding the reasons for disruptions, estimated arrival times, and compensation eligibility. Airlines are required to provide detailed information about alternative arrangements, such as hotel accommodations or meal vouchers, especially in cases of long delays or overnight stays. In addition, the updated rules clarify how return tickets can be used. If a passenger does not fully utilize the first year of their ticket, they may still benefit from the return portion, provided it aligns with specific conditions outlined in the legislation. This helps prevent situations where passengers lose unused portions of their booking due to misinterpretation of existing policies. The revisions were developed through extensive consultations involving consumer advocacy groups, airline representatives, and regulatory bodies. While the changes are largely welcomed by travelers, some industry experts have raised concerns about potential administrative challenges, particularly in implementing the new requirements uniformly across all EU member states. Travelers are advised to review the updated guidelines carefully, as the new rules will not apply immediately. Airlines are expected to begin incorporating these changes into their operations within the specified timeframe. As the transition period progresses, further clarification and adjustments may be made based on feedback from both passengers and regulators. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that the new regulations are implemented effectively, providing greater clarity and protection for millions of air travelers across Europe.
