The spontaneous patrols in Rozzano have led to a formal investigation after police identified an initial hypothesis of racial hatred. The information from the Carabinieri has been forwarded to the Milan Prosecutor’s Office, where Procurator Marcello Viola will coordinate the inquiry alongside another prosecutor yet to be appointed. The preliminary suspicion of racial hatred stems from incidents involving North African individuals during unauthorized patrols that took place on Wednesday and Thursday nights, marked by moments of tension and at least two assaults. The police began their assessment with an incident on Wednesday morning, where a 24-year-old Moroccan man was pulled by a woman and subsequently beaten by bystanders before being detained by law enforcement. In the evening, during the first unauthorized patrol, the man was recognized and again assaulted, along with a 40-year-old Moroccan who was intoxicated. The Carabinieri suspect these two men of committing the assault on the 24-year-old with the aggravating factor of racial hatred. On Friday, a different kind of procession took place in the town, which was officially authorized. The mayor, Mattia Ferretti, described it as a “peaceful and intercultural walk,” though he did not participate. He stated that the event aimed to show that Rozzano is not populated by violent individuals. Ferretti acknowledged the city's objective challenges, including its 5,500 social housing units among 40,000 residents. These factors contributed to Rozzano being designated a red zone, a status recently extended by six months by Prefect Claudio Sgaraglia. The government allocated funds through the Caivano decree to combat degradation. Rozzano is characterized by contradictions that have surfaced publicly, with protests over safety involving individuals who have had legal issues. Authorities aim to prevent such situations from escalating. Ferretti emphasized that institutions are responsible for fighting crime, noting heightened institutional attention and his ongoing communication with the chief of police and prefect. He distanced himself from actions that could lead to violence, stating that while the right to demonstrate is fundamental, it should occur peacefully and with authorization. He noted that families and decent citizens in Rozzano demonstrated their presence and peaceful nature. Law enforcement were present in force, conducting special surveillance operations as part of strategies defined by the Committee for Order and Security. In difficult areas, military personnel identified 57 individuals, checked 21 vehicles and one establishment. One person was arrested for drug possession, four others were reported, and drugs and a weapon were seized.
