Fire restrictions have been imposed across Slovenia due to high wildfire risk, raising concerns about whether picnics can still take place outdoors. The government has issued warnings that even small sparks could ignite fires under current conditions, prompting authorities to advise against open flames in natural areas. Despite these precautions, some commercial picnic venues remain operational, offering controlled environments for gatherings. The alert was raised on July 7th, with the country placed under “major fire danger” status, and parts of the Kras and Northern Coastal regions classified as “extreme fire danger.” These zones include the municipalities of Koper, Sežana, Divača, Hrpelje, Kozina, Komen, Nova Gorica, Miren, Kostanjevica, and Renče, Vogrsko. In such conditions, outdoor cooking over open flames or charcoal is strictly prohibited, according to the Slovenian Rescue Service (URSZR). General Director Leon Behin emphasized that even a spark could lead to a disaster, underscoring the severity of the situation. While public spaces designated for picnics are available, they require careful planning. Commercial operators, such as Piknik Placa in Ljubljana, confirm that their facilities adhere to all safety regulations and avoid open flames entirely. Gregor Širovnik explained that while there are no direct restrictions on their operations, high temperatures have reduced interest in outdoor activities. Similarly, Robert Lesičar from Oaza Priska in Jurklošter noted that while they face fewer challenges than others, they maintain strict fire safety protocols, especially on drier ground. Authorities recommend that individuals check with venue organizers before booking a space, ensuring compliance with local guidelines. Additionally, parking vehicles on dry grass or shrubs is discouraged, as this increases the risk of spontaneous combustion. The URSZR advises using paved or asphalted surfaces whenever possible to minimize hazards. Visitors are urged to follow all official instructions and remain vigilant during their outings. For private property owners, picnicking in backyards or gardens is permitted, as long as the area is part of a built-up plot rather than natural terrain. However, caution is still necessary. The URSZR recommends using gas grills with flat tops, which produce less heat and fewer sparks. If alternative equipment must be used, it should always be supervised by an adult. They emphasize that responsible behavior, avoiding open flames, and maintaining awareness can significantly reduce the likelihood of wildfires. As the summer progresses, the focus remains on preventing accidental fires. With continued high temperatures and dry conditions, the risk persists, and adherence to safety measures is crucial. Authorities continue monitoring the situation and will adjust guidelines as needed. Until further notice, outdoor gatherings involving open flames are strongly discouraged, and visitors are encouraged to prioritize safety above convenience.
